Dr. Jay Hapka is originally from Warren, Minnesota where he grew up on a family-owned potato farm. At the University of Minnesota he completed a bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language-Hearing Science with minors in both Neuroscience and Spanish. He moved to Tempe to complete his Doctor of Audiology degree at Arizona State University.
For Dr. Hapka, hearing has been a lifelong interest. His mother worked for the state of Minnesota coordinating services for children with hearing loss. She was also appointed to the Minnesota Commission of the Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing. He had an up-close and personal view of the impact that can be made on the lives of those with hearing loss using advocacy, training, and technology. He was inspired to pursue audiology as a career.
Dr. Hapka has completed clinical rotations at various hearing clinics and an ear-nose-throat clinic in the Phoenix area. He has also participated in humanitarian audiology missions bringing better hearing to Malawi in Africa in June of 2016 as well as Guaymas in Mexico in November of 2017.
In his spare time, Dr. Hapka cooks delicious meals in his kitchen and backyard. He is currently cooking his way through a Thai recipe book, but also fires up the grill for classic barbecue meals on the weekends. In the future, he hopes to travel to different parts of the world to experience the food that is important to different groups of people.
